Millions Of Eggs Recalled Over Possible Salmonella Contamination

US recalls 200 million eggs over food poisoning

A recall of 206,749,248 eggs has occurred in the United States, following 22 reports of illness linked to salmonella contamination.

It is believed that the eggs reached buyers in 9 states, including Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The eggs are from the plant P-1065, which is associated with Rose Acre Farms.

In 2010, a salmonella outbreak led to the massive recall of more than 1 billion eggs from Iowa farms. The F.D.A. urged consumers to check their purchases and avoid eating eggs that might be contaminated. Approximately 206,749,248 eggs are being recalled. They were distributed by Rose Acre Farms, and were sold under multiple brand names, including Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Food Lion, Glenview, Nelms, Sunshine Farm, and Great Value - a brand which is sold at Walmart stores.

The infections were first reported in early March, and a lab on April 11 confirmed that a sample from the Hyde County farm matched a strain that was spurring the illness, the FDA said.

Salmonella is a bacterium that adversely affects young children and the elderly, triggering fevers, vomiting and abdominal pain.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, twenty two illnesses have been reported to date.

If you did purchase any of the 200 million eggs you can bring them back for a full refund. "The facility includes 3 million laying hens with a USDA inspector on-site daily", said the FDA.
