James Comey gives first interview since President Trump fired him

James Comey's memoir: Trump fixates on proving lewd dossier allegations false

Comey, whose "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership" comes out Tuesday, worked at the Federal Bureau of Investigation for three presidents - George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump.

In one excerpt, Mr Comey said he did not remember "consciously thinking" about the election results as he made a decision to disclose that the FBI had reopened its investigation into Hillary Clinton's email use.

In his book, Comey expresses something similar, writing that it is "entirely possible" he was making the decision because he thought Clinton would win.

Because the Federal Bureau of Investigation was probing potential connections amongst rsquo & Trump Trump fired Comey putting a firestorm;s 20-16 Russian Federation and campaign's founding from the elections.

On his memoirs, Mr Trump said they are "self serving and FAKE".

But the president returned to the subject repeatedly, Comey reports, asking him to "lift the cloud" and corroborate the presidential denials of various sexual accusations.

"I was operating in a world where Hillary Clinton was going to beat Donald Trump", Comey told ABC News in an interview airing Sunday night.

But in "A Higher Loyalty", Comey says the wording - which clung to Clinton throughout her doomed campaign - is one of the things he would change, along with waiting until the end of his remarks to say he was not recommending charges.

The book - A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership - reportedly paints an unflattering portrait of Mr Trump, who fired Mr Comey a year ago.

Trump fired Comey last May, setting off a chain of events that led to the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Comey writes that Trump's months-long effort to curry his fealty gave him "flashbacks to my earlier career as a prosecutor against the mob".

Some of this has become remarkably vituperative, assuming the tone of Trump's own attacks on Twitter.

Comey might be better seen in the light of Washington Under Trump, where other top officials expected to fade into the background have instead become powerfully vocal anti-Trump forces: Clapper (a Comey pal) and former Central Intelligence Agency directors Michael Hayden and John Brennan. "I don't remember consciously thinking about that, but it must have been".

Former FBI director James Comey told associates Donald Trump was "outside the realm of normal" and "crazy".

Clinton has previously noted she believes Comey's announcement played a part in her losing out on the presidency.

In a Friday tweet, Trump claimed without evidence that "McCabe was totally controlled by Comey - McCabe is Comey!"

Sanders explained Trump's heated response to the book by attacking the media for giving Comey a platform, saying the president "has every right to call out that individual that you guys are propping up".

In the extracts, Comey also says he intentionally wore a gold tie so he wasn't displaying the red or blue colors of the respective political parties. But majority did not have as much power to derail her campaign as Comey. In May, shortly after Comey's dismissal, he rejected Trump's description of Comey as a "nut job" and said "I like Comey" - though he also defended Trump's decision to fire him.
