Bracing for an ice storm

Parts of Southern Ontario could be hit with an ice storm this weekend according to Environment Canada

A freezing rain warning was issued for the region, surrounding areas, and the GTA on Friday, ahead of the storm system that could leave most of the southern province covered in a thick glaze of ice by Sunday, forcing school cancellations.

Environment Canada says freezing rain is expected to end for a few hours Saturday evening, but is expected to move back in Sunday. Some snow may fall in areas north of Highway 7 later Saturday, with several centimetres of snow and ice pellets expected. Environment Canada is warning that ice accumulations of this extent, combined with gusty northeast winds of 70-80 km/h, may result in considerable power outages due to fallen tree limbs and power lines. "The precipitation may start off as freezing rain early in the morning before quickly changing to rain as temperatures rise above the freezing mark", the national weather agency said in its advisory.

Toronto is expected to only receive 15 millimetres of freezing rain, while Kimbell said areas like Hamilton could receive between 20 and 30 millimetres by Sunday.

- McMaster University and Mohawk College are both closed Saturday because of the freezing rain warning for the region. Freezing rain may also become mixed with or turn into ice pellets.

He says the storm's "impressive rainfall totals" could produce a total of 3 inches of rain and ice melt through late Monday.

If you experience an outage or see downed power wires, you can report it by calling 1-800-867-5222.

Conditions may become a little slippery in Chatham-Kent this weekend. Freezing rain is likely to transition to rain midday Sunday.

"We're ready to respond 24/7", Hydro One said in a tweet.
