Bevin claims children were sexually abused, tried drugs because of teacher protest

Kentucky House overrides veto of school funding bill

The statewide teachers' union called on lawmakers to override Bevin's vetoes of the two-year budget and revenue bills because the legislation set aside more funding for public education than the governor's proposed spending plan did.

On March 30, 26 districts canceled school due to the massive absence of protesting teachers. You know, here's what's insane to me.

The home voted 5-7 to 40 to override the veto of the tax growth and sixty six to 28 to override the budget veto.

Kentucky lawmakers have officially finalized an override of Gov. Bevin's veto of the $480 million tax hike that helps pay for increases in public education spending. "It's fantastic that even when Republicans control both chambers of state government as well as the governor's mansion that they can't even agree on the direction to take Kentucky", Ben Self, chairman of the Democratic Party, said in a statement.

Kentucky's pension bill revised numerous controversial provisions of its predecessor, like a mandatory 3 percent contribution into retiree health insurance funds and the end of a $145 million health fund for retired teachers.

The House voted 74-12 Saturday to not fund their pensions.

Bevin had vetoed both bills, warning the new taxes would not generate enough money to cover the new spending.

Teachers from across the state rallied in Frankfort on Friday to encourage legislators to override the governor's vetoes of the tax reform bill and the budget. A survey done in 2011 and summarized in 2013 found that two percent of 5-year-olds and 6-year-olds who lived with their mother were left alone some of the time they weren't in school; that proportion increased to almost 30 percent of 14-year-olds.

The veto put Republican lawmakers in a tough position, asking them to vote a second time on a tax increase in an election year.

"Is Governor Bevin out of his mind?" said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, in a comment to BuzzFeed News.

"And they serve to discourage anyone from wanting to be a teacher in Kentucky when the governor is bashing them on an nearly daily basis", McKim told WDRB News.

Sammi Hatfield teaches third grade in Montgomery County.

"They thought it was personal then, but it's really personal now", Hatfield said.

Kentucky State Police limited access into the building to only 500 protesters at a time, creating a crowded bottleneck of people trying to enter the Capitol. "We don't know the funding sources".

New teachers will also enter into a cash-balance plan, which is "less generous than traditional pensions but more reliable than 401 (k)-style plans", according to Daniel Desroches of the Lexington Herald-Leader.

"There are protests and rallies going on all across this commonwealth".

This fall, all 100 seats in the state House are up for re-election and half of the 38 seats in the Senate.

Pension is often the only income source after leaving the school system; according to the Herald-Leader, retired teachers in Kentucky can not collect Social Security.
