Senate Democrats urge resolution calling for removal of EPA chief Pruitt

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt speaks at the White House in 2017

The Feb. 14 memo states that EPA intelligence officials told the others that "the "threat" to the Administrator was being inappropriately mischaracterized" by the security detail and inspector general's office and notes that EPA Intelligence has "not seen any analysis to indicate why the Administrator would be at any greater risk on a commercial airline than any other passenger, or why a trained EPA [security agent] could not protect the Administrator in a different location on the aircraft" than in the business or first-class section.

President Trump has stood by Pruitt despite an avalanche of scandals.

.

The EPA has claimed that Pruitt requires the unprecedented security because of the volume of threats he's received since joining the administration - like people cursing at him in public.

The Democrats said they found no records describing specific, credible threats against Pruitt.

In addition, Gowdy said in his letter Wednesday that he plans to examine Pruitt's unusual lease agreement for a condo on Capitol Hill a year ago with Vicki Hart, a health-care lobbyist.

Continuing with the use of bold and underline print, the memo states that "u$3 sing all source intelligence resources, EPA Intelligence has not identified any specific credible direct threat to the EPA Administrator".

Politico first reported Tuesday that the career EPA security staffer who wrote the February memo, Mario Caraballo, was sacked shortly after the Democrats' account of it became public.

The EPA insisted that the timing of Carballo's axing was coincidental, but Democratic Senators begged to differ, calling the development "deeply troubling".

Sen. John Barasso, R-Wyo., said Tuesday he would not hold a hearing on the issue.

Gowdy said in Wednesday's letter that the EPA had shared some documents, some of which were shared in private, but did not say what they concerned.

Pruitt also faces an EPA's inspector general investigation for his travel and is under fire following reports that he rented space at cut-rate prices in a Capitol Hill condominium owned by the wife of a prominent energy lobbyist.

Pruitt - who's facing scrutiny over a dizzying number of controversies involving hefty traveling, security and lodging expenses - entered the Environmental Protection Agency with a determination to overhaul the department's mission to protect the environment. Perrotta oversaw a rapid expansion of the EPA chief's security detail to accommodate guarding him day and night, even on family vacations and when Pruitt was home in Oklahoma.

Former Gov. Chris Christie said he expected Pruitt to eventually resign, saying "I don't know how you survive" earlier this month on ABC's "This Week". Pruitt's premium status gave him and his security chief access to VIP airport lounges.

When CNN first reported on Chmielewski's suspension, EPA spokesman Jahan Wilcox said he is among "a group of disgruntled employees who have either been dismissed or reassigned".
