Michael Goolaerts dies after Paris-Roubaix cardiac arrest

Peter Sagan wins Paris-Roubaix

Goolaerts was hospitalised on Sunday after crashing out at the Paris-Roubaix one-day cycling race, his team announced, and died about 10:40 pm. TV footage of the race showed Goolaerts lying unresponsive on the side of the road as the peloton passed him.

The team said Goolaerts died "in the presence of his family members and loved ones, who we keep in our thoughts".

The 160-mile race continued with Slovakia's three-time world champion Peter Sagan winning, and a cycling official later defended the decision not to stop the event. Organizers said in a medical statement that he suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest.

David Lappartient, president of the Union Cycliste Internationale, expressed the organisation's sadness at the tragic news. He was then attended to by a medical team and appeared to receive CPR. "We share their vast sadness", he posted on Twitter.

"I'm exhausted following this race", Sagan, the first rider as Frenchman Bernard Hinault to triumph here as a world champion, said. Goolaerts hadn't raced it before and crashed in the second of the course's 29 cobblestone sections, which make up about 20% of the course, while making a right-hand turn.

Two years ago, Belgian cyclist Daan Myngheer, died at the age of 22, two days after having a heart attack on the Criterium International in Corsica.

Belgian cyclist Michael Goolaerts has tragically died following a crash at today's Paris-Roubaix.

The race was marred by several crashes that ended the hopes of outsiders Sebastian Langeveld and Matteo Trentin close to the Trouee d'Arenberg sector.

Nairo Quintana, a previous victor of the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta, tweeted: "Upset about the death of Michael Goolaerts today in #ParisRoubaix".
