Syria actions demand worldwide response

Trump Promises Decision on Military Action Against Syria in Next Two Days

But the USA has renewed a push for the United Nations Security Council to establish a new inquiry into who is to blame for using chemical weapons in Syria.

Meanwhile, Theresa May, the British prime minister, said on Monday that the Syrian government "and its backers, including Russian Federation, must be held to account" if it is found to be responsible for dropping chemical weapons on Douma residents.

The situation is being discussed on Monday by the UN Security Council - a group of countries that work together to try to bring peace - and the European Union has called for an "immediate response by the worldwide community".

Russian Federation and Syria have blamed Israel for an attack on a Syrian military airport on Monday that reportedly killed at least 14 people.

"We are very concerned", Trump said.

Rep. Ed Perlmutter, D-Colo., said he was working to further understand the details of the latest alleged chemical attack, and also pointed out that Assad is not supposed to have chemical weapons under the 2013 deal.

The new proposed United Nations resolution includes rival Russian and Western proposals for a new body to assess blame.

He objected to Haley referring to his government as a "regime" and warned that he would raise a point of order the next time she did that - a move that could disrupt Council meetings, a frequent happening during the height of the Cold War. Trump has declared his intent to withdraw USA troops from Syria in the coming months, despite resistance from many of his advisers.

"If it's Russian Federation, if it's Syria, if it's Iran, if it's all of them together, we'll figure it out and we'll know the answers quite soon", Trump said.

The Syrian government denied the chemical weapons allegations, calling them fabrications.

There is an global law which bans countries from using chemical weapons in wars, as they are deemed too cruel to use on other people. The strike took place after a suspected chemical weapons attack on the rebel-held town of Douma which, according to one Syrian aid organisation, killed at least 60 people.

Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron have also vowed a "strong, joint response", while Jim Mattis, the United States defence secretary, said nothing was off the table in terms of military action.

Like past reports of alleged chemical attacks on the rebel-controlled enclave, the global reaction has been polarised.

August 21, 2013: In the Damascus suburb of Ghouta, more than 200 people are reportedly killed by poison gas.

Since 2012, Israel has struck inside Syria more than 100 times, mostly targeting suspected weapons' convoys destined for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which has been fighting alongside Syrian government forces.

As he began an evening meeting with military leaders at the White House, Trump promised to "make a decision tonight or very shortly thereafter".

So the US must keep all options open. The faction in Douma will release around 200 people held captive, the source said.

Ms Haley has called for a vote on Tuesday on a draft resolution to set up a new inquiry into the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

A Syrian woman holds a child and runs for cover following Syrian government air strikes on the Eastern Ghouta rebel-held enclave of Douma, on the outskirts of the capital Damascus on March 20, 2018. He noted that Russian Federation was a guarantor of a 2013 agreement to eliminate Syria's entire chemical weapons arsenal, suggesting Moscow shares blame for the suspected gas attack.

"We have a lot of options militarily, and we'll be letting you know pretty soon".
