F1: Ferrari Slapped With Hefty Fine For Raikkonen's Pitstop Incident

Race winner Sebastian Vettel of Germany and Ferrari celebrates in parc ferme during the Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix

With Kimi out and both Mercedes on a better strategy, Ferrari was forced to extend Vettel's stint on the soft tyres till the end of the race.

Vettel leads the championship on a flawless 50 points, 17 ahead of Lewis Hamlton.

Vettel added first place in Sakhir to the top spot from two weeks ago in Australia as a risky tire strategy paid off to beat the Mercedes duo of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton.

After a somewhat fortuitous fifth place finish in Melbourne, following some key retirements, Alonso proclaimed, "now we can fight" on the team radio.

The Finn was left sitting in his vehicle for a while before stepping out while the mechanics focused on their stricken team mate on the floor.

Sebastien Vettel stormed to victory with a masterful drive in Bahrain to make it two from two for the German in 2018.

Bottas first angled for a pass for the lead at Turn 1 on the final lap, only for Vettel to cut him off and just retain his advantage.

Defending champion Hamilton has been off the pace all weekend and, while he posted the fourth quickest lap in a thrill-a-minute qualifying session, he will be shunted down the order following his penalty for a gearbox change.

Vettel was the first to blink on lap 18, pitting for softs and rejoining fourth.

Bottas nearly overtook Vettel on the last lap, but Vettel made a crucial blocking move and won by only 0.6 seconds. The German was dropped into clean air, giving him the chance to immediately push and put pressure on Mercedes, who dummied for a pit stop on the same lap before keeping Bottas and Hamilton out. The latter turned out to be the case for Raikkonen on lap 36.

Raikkonen's left tyre was still being attended to when he slammed on the power and he drove straight into the leg of the mechanic who was badly hurt. The Finn pulled away, hitting one of the mechanics.

"I am a bit sad, because in the pit stop with Kimi one of our mechanics got injured", Vettel said.

Up front, Vettel built a lead of 7.5s over Bottas, with Hamilton a further 9.1s back in third.

In the end, Hamilton's pace became moot as Vettel hung on to set up what promises to be a great season.

"I think I came on the radio with ten laps to go saying I had everything under control but that was a lie". The scuffle between the two ended with Verstappen getting a puncture.

As they headed into the first corner on the final lap, Bottas had a half-hearted attack but he was just not close enough.

Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne gave McLaren, now with Renault engines, a second successive double points finish in seventh and eighth respectively to lift the team to third overall. That was the original plan but then we diverted obviously and tried to make the tyres last. I don't know more than that.

It was his 49th career victory and his second in a row to start the season.
