Korea seeks summit with Trump in Pyongyang

North Korea is reportedly advocating for the summit to be in Pyongyang, while the capital of Mongolia is also under consideration.

Trump agreed to the summit on the spot when visiting South Korean officials - South Korea's National Security Adviser Chung Eui Yong and intelligence chief Suh Hoon - presented him the invitation from Mr Kim early last month (March ). Trump has traded barbs with the North Korean leader for much of his time in office as Pyongyang pursues development of nuclear weapons capable of hitting the United States.

During that visit Kim was reported by Beijing as having committed to denuclearisation. The countries will hold at least one more meeting on these issues to discuss the summit's agenda.

The meeting on Saturday (April 7) at the North Korean side of the border village of Panmunjom was attended by three working-level officials from the South and their three to four counterparts from the North, according to Seoul officials.

South Korean media have speculated whether Kim, who has a flair for the dramatic, would cross the Military Demarcation Line that bisects the countries in a symbolic gesture of peace.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in and US President Donald Trump have both agreed to meet Kim.

Experts have urged the Government to engage in diplomacy with the North Korean regime to keep Kim from triggering an worldwide nuclear conflict.

Trump has frequently lambasted North Korea for its continued intercontinental ballistic missile tests, referring to Kim as "Little Rocket Man".

Lt.Gen. Benjamin C. Freakley told Arizona State University (ASU): "It's in the best interests of the United States and the rest of the world to be engaged in a diplomatic and political dialogue with the leadership of North Korea to try to prevent a nuclear or even a conventional war because they have an extremely sizeable military force".

The private organisation, which monitors nuclear threats against the USA, said the hermit state remained a huge threat and should not be trusted.

The United States responded by frequently sending its strategic assets such as long-range bombers and aircraft carriers to the region in a show of force and floating talks of military options against North Korea.
