Steve Spurrier to return to coaching in new spring football league

Report: Steve Spurrier signs on as head coach in new spring football league, the Alliance of American Football

The Alliance of American Football league named Spurrier head coach of a new professional league team based in Orlando. One regular-season Alliance game will air exclusively on CBS Sports Network each week as well.

The league was co-founded by Charlie Ebersol and former NFL GM & Pro Football Hall of Famer Bill Polian, and plans to announce seven other teams in the next 12 weeks.

The league is slated to debut on February 9, 2019 on CBS.

The Alliance of American Football has planted its first flag. The first game and the championship game will be carried by CBS. "We're not recruiting ninth- and 10th-graders all year or searching for players". "We wanted to give fans not just an opportunity to see great football but to see what would happen if you brought the players and the league together", Ebersol said.

To help him steer the league, Ebersol has brought on former NFL general manager Bill Polian, now an analyst for ESPN.

The AAF will feature eight teams, with 50-man rosters. There will also be a 30-second play clock and mandatory two-point conversion attempts after touchdowns. Spurrier has made it clear that his days of being a head coach on the college level are over, but he said he would always be open to returning to the sidelines in a limited capacity.

Spurrier, 72, also has experience as an National Football League head coach, though he was less successful with the Washington Redskins, notching a 12-20 record in two seasons.

"The Alliance offers a unique opportunity to get back into coaching, this time for a spring season, and work closely with hungry, talented athletes looking to begin, revive or extend their professional careers", Spurrier said in a statement. "Those players get a chance to continue playing even if they don't play at the highest level, and then maybe someday they play well enough to go to the highest level". Ward will serve as the league's executive of player relations. The player side will be overseen by former Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, and the team side will be guided by former Southern California standout and executive J.K. McKay.
