Amazon Launches Alexa Intercom Feature for Echo Devices in Canada, USA

Amazon Echo

Wouldn't it be nice if Alexa could help you hurry your family along or maybe announce that dinner is ready? Currently, to activate Alexa on the Amazon Fire 7 or Fire HD 8, you pick up either tablet and tap the Home button until a blue line appears.

Those with more than one Echo can say "Alexa, announce..." in order to send an audio message transmitted to every Echo device on the same network. It's possible to disable this feature through Alexa's settings menu, as well as to control whether the functionality works while the device is password locked.

You can also say "Alexa, tell everyone..." or "Alexa, broadcast..." to access the new feature.

If you want to exclude a specific device within your household, say, in the bedroom where your husband is sleeping, Amazon said you can use the Do Not Disturb setting.

According to the company, the feature "enables users to make one-way announcements to all of the Echo devices in their house", acting as a one-way intercom.

The downsides (outside of the power constraint) are that since the tablets do not have the far field microphone arrays that proper Echo devices have.

Alexa Announcements are available across Amazon's entire lineup of Echo smart speakers. It has preset sounds which can be triggered by Google Home broadcasts, for particular incidents. Amazon calls such products "an example of how Alexa can be integrated into products already found in the home" and has high hopes they will take off in the not too distant feature.
