Last Syrian Rebel Group Starts Leaving Ghouta

General Ali Mahyoub the spokesman for the Syrian armed forces announces “full victory” against terrorist groups in Eastern Ghouta in a televised statement

The Army of Islam, the largest rebel group in Syria, is fleeing Eastern Ghouta.

The government has been trying to reclaim the area after seven years of fighting.

Syria's state-run television network aired footage of eight buses leaving Douma, located about 10 kilometers northeast of the center of Damascus.

A civilian committee taking part in the negotiations with Russian Federation said a deal had been reached "to evacuate humanitarian cases to northern Syria".

A political official in Jaish al Islam denied they had agreed to evacuate Douma and said the government-inspired reports were stepped up psychological warfare aimed at forcing them to capitulate.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attacks over the past 24 hours struck in and around the town of Albu Kamal, near the border with Iraq.

Eastern Ghouta was taken over by rebel groups in mid-2013, resulting in the Syrian government besieging the area since then.

The evacuation of the rebels and their families from Douma comes a day after a deal was reached between the Islam Army militants and the Syrian army under the mediation of Russian Federation.

It also said a Russian-led committee with representatives from Turkey, Iran and Russia, the three guarantors of the Astana peace talks who set up "de-escalation" zones across Syria, would be responsible for handing over prisoners of war jailed by the rebels.

Since Feb. 19, more than 1,400 people have been killed in attacks by the regime and its allies in Eastern Ghouta, according to local civil-defense sources.

On Saturday, the Syrian army command announced it had liberated all towns and cities in the embattled Eastern Ghouta, green belt around the capital pertaining to the province of Damascus Countryside, and was readying for the final assault to free Douma of terrorists.

The first batch of fighters from Jaish al Islam are being transported to Jarablus from the town of Douma as part of an evacuation deal, leaving behind only undecided hardline fighters, regime media and a war monitor say.

"We will stay in this town and will not leave".

"Our position is consistent and clear", he said. Backed by Russia, Mr Assad's forces have scored a series of victories over rebel forces in recent years, often through campaigns of siege, aerial bombardment as well as ground offensives that have drawn widespread worldwide condemnation.

At least 46,000 people have been evacuated from Eastern Ghouta since the evacuation process began on March 22.

These include more than 1,000 people - fighters from another faction, Faylaq Al Rahman, and family members - who left Douma late Sunday, according to state media.

On Monday before dawn, an AFP correspondent saw men, women and children step off buses in the area of Qalaat al-Madiq in central Hama province, a way station on the road to Idlib.

A man had a gun slung on his shoulder as he picked up a travel bag, while a young boy, who appeared weak and unable to move his limbs, was carried into an ambulance.

According to United Nations officials, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict to date.
