CA ban Smith and Warner for one year

Australia’s Cameron Bancroft has said he has been charged with attempted ball-tampering after being spoken to by umpires about an object in his pocket during the third Test in South Africa

Posting on Twitter, Warner said: "Mistakes have been made which have damaged cricket". "There is a human side to this".

Smith, who made a statement then took a handful of questions before breaking down in tears and the press conference ending, had effectively turned a blind eye to the plot. Their health and well being is extremely important to us. Smith and Warner have also been banned from captaining Australia for two years.

On Wednesday, Steve Smith and David Warner were banned by Cricket Australia (CA) for 12 months each for their involvement in the ball-tampering controversy that erupted last Saturday during the Cape Town Test match, while Cameron Bancroft, who had claimed he used sticky yellow tape, was banned for nine months.

"I'm not going to resign".

"We have seven cameras that stay with the ball always, whether it is in play or not", he revealed. Obviously, previously, we've butted heads on the line but that's not the way to go for us playing cricket moving forward. "I hope I can be a force for change", he added.

The event took place during South Africa's innings in Newlands Test when Bancroft was spotted on the big screen holding a small yellow tape, rubbing the rough part of the ball before hiding the object inside his pants.

Smith had already been suspended for one Test and docked his entire match fee by the International Cricket Council, and Sutherland said further punishments "will reflect the gravity of the situation".

"I understand that Steve Smith and David Warner are getting a 12-month ban from the game in Australia", ABC's chief cricket commentator Jim Maxwell was quoted as saying in the report.

Lehmann admitted that respect for opposition will be paramount from now on. "We did not take any decision in haste, it was a well thought out decision".

"The players that they have banned, we are also barring those two players from this season", IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla told reporters.

"Like all of Australia we are extremely disappointed and we know we have let so many people down and for that I am truly sorry". So I apologise for that.

The financial hit will be significant, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) blocking the duo from taking part in this year's Indian Premier League.

"As was made clear by James [Sutherland] yesterday and today, the coaches and support staff had no prior knowledge of the incident".

"It will blow over in time, but it's grown and grown and, like I say, he's not a bad guy".

"There are those countries that don't like Australia, don't like individuals in the team, and there has been a build up of hate which has exploded and created this tornado of hysteria".

Regardless of the feelings towards them, one notable escapee was coach Darren Lehmann, the man who some suspected of being the real mastermind behind Australia's skulduggery.

"My family and I got a lot of abuse over the last week", said Lehmann, a burly former test player known for his no-nonsense approach on and off the field.

"I have never ever been involved in tampering with the ball (before now) and it clearly compromises my values and what I stand for as a player and as a person". That will be a key discussion point of an independent review of the team's culture that has been announced.
