Iowa Family Reportedly Found Dead Inside Mexican Condo

Iowa family of 4 died of gas asphyxiation at Mexican resort

In posts on social media, family members said the Sharps left the United States last week and had been expected to return on Wednesday.

PHOTO: Kevin Wayne Sharp, 41; his wife, Amy Marie Sharp, 38; Sterling Wayne Sharp, 12; and Adrianna Marie Sharp, 7, are seen in this undated photo posted on Facebook.

Authorities said that there was "no sign of any traumatic injury" though it wasn't immediately clear what caused their deaths.

Autopsies are being performed in Mexico.

Police in Creston, Iowa, say that the bodies of Kevin, Amy, Sterling, and Adrianna Sharp were discovered in a condominium in Akumal, Mexico.

Creston police contacted the U.S. State Department, and the bodies were found during a welfare check at the condo in Tulum. "Thank you for all the posts, shares, and kind words", Ashli Peterson, a relative, wrote on Facebook.

Jana Weland, a relative, told CNN the family arrived in Tulum on March 15.

"I know it's early yet, but the family meant so much to the town we thought that we could at least start doing something to let the extended family know how much they meant to everyone, but also that they mattered, that they were here".

Now the Franklins say the only thing they can do is be there for the Sharps' family and remember their friends.

Then the family failed to attend a basketball game Wednesday night in Danville, Illinois - a game Weland said the family was looking forward to. "Members of their families have been strong Southwestern supporters for years. They were to be right here enjoying us play basketball today", Lorensen stated.

She said Mr Sharp texted a friend named Travis Anderson at about 5pm local time.

The family were due to depart Mexico and return home to St Louis, US, but Kevin and Amy's parents were mystified when the couple did not arrive. "That is the last interaction she made".

A statement on the website said: "While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted, criminal organisation assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by USA citizens". The State Department issued a level 2 advisory to those traveling to Quintana Roo on March 16, meaning visitors should be cautious because of increased crime there.
