WhatsApp was brought into the Facebook fold after a $19 billion acquisition in 2014. At present, Acton is running his own venture, named Signal.

Having said that, Acton isn't the only former executive to criticize Facebook. Like any gloomy interviewee, he wrote a Tweet saying, "Facebook turned me down".

The same day, the data analytics firm was embroiled in further scandal after an exposé was aired by United Kingdom broadcaster Channel 4 showing Cambridge Analytica executives, including its CEO Alexander Nix, speaking to an undercover reporter about how it had helped to elect U.S. President Donald Trump in 2016. "Looking forward to life's next adventure".

Meanwhile, London-based Cambridge Analytica says it deleted all Facebook data it obtained from a third-party application in 2014 after learning the information did not adhere to data protection rules. The company made use of this data to build a social media strategy in order to assist Donald Trump's campaign for president.

Acton's remark comes in the wake of increasing public outrage from users around the world over the misuse of private data of as many as 50 million Facebook users by British firm Cambridge Analytica.

The social media giant admitted that an estimated 2,70,000 people had downloaded the app and shared their personal information with it.

After a huge data leak, Brian Acton advised the Facebook user to stay away from the app. However, Cambridge Analytica is alleged to have planted fake news items in front of Facebook users throughout the 2016 presidential race. The movement for encouraging Facebook users to delete their profiles on the social media platform have come out with the #deletefacebook hashtag.

Speaking of Zuckerberg, Members of Parliament in the United Kingdom have summoned the CEO to appear before a select committee investigating fake news. The firm is accused of using the data of 50 million Facebook members to influence the 2016 United States presidential election.
