Amy Yu and Kevin Esterly timeline: Secrets, suspicions, then a flight
A 16-year-old Pennsylvania girl and a 45-year-old man were found Mexico on Saturday, March 17, after the pair allegedly ran off together nearly two weeks ago, authorities said.
According to CNN, Yu was found "unharmed and in good health", said Allentown police, and has been brought back home to Allentown, Pennsylvania.
The arrest came two days after Mexican authorities issued an Amber Alert for Yu, which stated that she could in danger.
The two were reported missing on March 5, when Esterly is believed to have signed her out of school in Allentown by poising as her stepfather.
- Amy Yu and Kevin Esterly were found by US and Mexican authorities and Mexican officials have taken Esterly into custody.
Esterly reportedly checked Yu out of Lehigh Valley Academy Charter School nine times between November 2017 and February of this year.
The attorney for Esterly's wife reportedly said she has retained the services of a divorce lawyer and believes Kevin Esterly is not in a mentally stable state. Amy's mother said the texts read as though Amy was texting her boyfriend. He tried to convince his wife, Stacey Esterly, that the pair's relationship was a father-and-daughter one, being as Yu's father has lived in China sine she was a child.
Esterly had known Amy for at least eight years, having met her family through a Lowhill Township church.
Amy has been safely returned to her family in Pennsylvania, according to a statement from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security investigators.
Amy was last seen by her brother, John, who said she fled after being dropped off with him by their mother at their school bus stop.
The case has made headlines in the Lehigh Valley and beyond. He withdrew $4,000 from her bank account before vanishing.
As details about the relationship trickled out, there were fights over phones that contained a troubling electronic trail.
Esterly is expected to be turned over to Miami Police Department and then extradited to Allentown where he is facing a felony charge of custodial interference.
When the alarming pattern was detected in February, Esterly was barred from school grounds and a series of disagreements allegedly arose between Yu's mother, Esterly and his wife.
CNN has reached out to Mexico's attorney general and the federal police for comment, but has not heard back. "She is glad that Amy is safe and that Kevin is with authorities".
