Ex-Raiders CB Sean Smith Pleads Guilty to Assault, Begins Prison Sentence

Nathan Fenno

When Smith first inked a four-year contract with the Raiders for a whopping $38 million, it was enough to stave off every other suitor in the team's hopes to remedy their pass defense. A person familiar with the move says Smith was told that he will be let go before the start of the new league year. But he never played up to that level and the Raiders have chose to cut him instead of paying him $8.5 million this year. It's also likely that Sean Smith's professional football career is now over.

Shortly after, it was reported by Nathan Fenno of the Los Angeles Times that Smith will serve some jail time after the 30-year-old cornerback plead guilty to felony assault charges made against him from an incident that occurred last July.

Former Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers linebacker and defensive end Aldon Smith was in a San Francisco courtroom on Monday to enter a not guilty plea. Santiago said Smith argued with his sister and Woods intervened during the dispute. However, he said witnesses saw Smith stomp on the victim's head. He allowed opposing quarterbacks to post a 116.5 passer rating when targeting him in 2016, according to SportRadar.

During his stint with the Rams, Carrier recorded just 71 receiving yards on eight catches and 11 targets across 14 games of action.

Oakland will again seek to bolster the secondary in free agency, looking for a starter at cornerback to pair with last year's first-round pick Gareon Conley.
