Valve is Going to Start Shipping Games Again

Artifact board

During a bit about how Valve focused on developing Steam and creating new hardware, co-founder Gabe Newell stated, "Artifact is the first of several games that are going to be coming from us".

With Valve's new expertise in software and hardware development, it will be interesting to see how the company plans to take a leaf out of Nintendo's book, hopefully, the wait won't be too long. He followed this up in a round-table interview with the media in February that Valve does have multiple games in development, with three of them being VR titles. Keighley had a chance to play it and said it's going to be revolutionary for the genre.

Furthermore, Newell expressed concerns about the direction that the PC games market was set in - saying that it was becoming more of a closed ecosystem. "An incredible amount of depth already". After what seems like a lifetime of sticking mostly to Steam and supporting Team Fortress and Dota 2, Gabe Newell announced today that Valve will be getting back into the software business, in addition to running Steam and making Steam-themed hardware. "When Miyamoto is sitting down thinking about the next version of Zelda or Mario he's thinking what is the controller going to look like, what sort of graphics and other capabilities, and he can introduce new capabilities like motion input because he controls both of those things". Not Half-Life 3 confirmed good, but good all the same.

"Hearthstone is a great game", Newell told us during yesterday's presentation. Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below. Now there's pretty much no project in the hardware space that we wouldn't be comfortable taking on.

Said in classic Newell form (he's known to be a bit cheeky), his commentary definitely did little to dampen that fandom flame. "That's something we've been jealous of, and that's something you'll see us taking advantage of subsequently". We can design chips if we need to, we can do industrial design, and so on.

Valve isn't done with hardware though, but now it'll go "hand-in-hand with software design", meaning you should really keep an eye on what Valve is up to in the coming months.
