Valley shuts as Shopian death toll reaches 6

J&K: Militants attack Army's Mobile Vehicle Check Post in Shopian, one killed

The deaths on Sunday evening occurred after a militant travelling in a auto attacked an Indian Army's mobile vehicle checkpost near Pahnoo village in Shopian district, some 60 km south of Srinagar. The youths were Suhail Ahmad Wagay, 22, Shahid Khan, 21, Shahnawaz Wagay, 23, and Gowhar Ahmad Lone. The identities of the civilians killed during the clash are being ascertained, the police said.

While the security forces say that the 3 others killed were associates of the terrorist or OGWs meaning Over-Ground Workers or associates in counter-terrorism parlance, locals allege that the 3 victims were civilians killed in army firing.

A police official said a joint MVCP (mobile vehicle check post) near Pohan in Shopian had signalled a auto to stop, but it did not. In the retaliation, one terrorist was killed. Four persons were confirmed dead on Sunday night and two more bodies were recovered on Monday morning, said reports quoting the police.

As the news about the civilian killings spread, protests erupted in various areas of Kashmir on Monday with people alleging that the army killed civilians "intentionally".

The various business communities of the valley also reacted to the killings.

"No doubt they were civilians but investigations will reveal their role with the militants", said a senior army official.

He said police has reached the spot and started legal formalities. "These individuals were accompanying the militant", the spokesman added, not identifying them as OGWs as was done on Sunday.

The volatile south Kashmir area has been plunged into unrest again following the killing of four civilians by security forces in an encounter in Shopian, that saw two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants killed on Sunday.

The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) in Kashmir that comprises of two factions of Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Syed Ali Geelani and Yasin Malik led Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) called for a strike against the killings, terming them "barbaric".

Contrary to the Army's views, Ms. Mufti expressed "distress over the deaths of civilians caught in the crossfire".

Mobile Internet service was snapped in twin districts of Shopian and Pulwama in south Kashmir while high-speed service was suspended across the Valley.

Examinations for various classes by J&K School Board and Kashmir University have also been postponed. In summer capital Srinagar, a security clampdown is being enforced by security forces in six police station areas "as a precautionary measure".
