Mile legend Roger Bannister passes away

What is the record for running a mile, after death of Sir Roger Bannister?

Nearly 64 years ago, Sir Roger Bannister put Britain on the map with his astounding, record-breaking mile run in less than four minutes.

The condition progressively damages part of the brain over time and is one Bannister was familiar with, even before he was first diagnosed a few years ago, from his lengthy career as neurologist. He met with Sir Roger Bannister several times in the years before his death.

Speaking of his feat in 2012, Sir Roger said: "It's unbelievable that more people have climbed Mount Everest than have broken the 4-minute mile".

El Guerrouj, now 43, wowed the world on 7 July in Rome, and after his race he suggested he could break his own record in future by running the mile in 3:41 or 3:42. "But, without cheating with drugs, I don't think anyone will ever beat 3:30".

"The world's best runners had been attempting the four-minute barrier for a quarter of a century".

Roger Gilbert Bannister was born March 23, 1929, in Harrow, near London.

Bannister was born in Harrow England and began to run competitively at the age of 17 in Oxford in 1946. He won many mile and 800m races, and set his sights on the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

Bannister was unhappy and pondered giving up running but set a new goal for himself instead: the sub-four minute mile.

Sir Roger is survived by his wife, artist Moyra Jacobsson, daughter of the Swedish economist Per Jacobsson, who was managing director of the International Monetary Fund.

Among other things, he developed the first test for anabolic steroids as chairman of the Sports Council from 1971 to 1974.

He went on to become a leading brain doc and Master of Pembroke College, Oxford. The American Academy of Neurology gave him an award for lifetime achievement in 2005.

"None of my athletics was the greatest achievement", he once said.

He revealed he had the neurological disorder Parkinson's disease in a BBC interview in 2014. "Life has its physical challenges, but I take every day as it comes", he said.
