NBA team owner fined for tanking comments

Mavericks franchise owner Mark Cuban

I've been around too long.

Tanking does not involve players intentionally losing games.

Tanking, which has become fashionable for many teams in recent seasons, is a touchy subject for Adam Silver, the NBA's commissioner, who has been working to maintain the league's competitive nature.

And that certainly appears to be the trend in Dallas. The team with the worst record at the end of the season has a 25% chance of landing the No. 1 overall pick at the NBA Draft lottery.

They drafted rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr., one of the league's rising stars.

Cuban's Mavericks have a record of 18-40 and instead of competing for a playoff spot, they are competing for top pick in the upcoming 2018 National Basketball Association draft.

Cuban said his comments were an example of him being transparent with his players.

The Mavericks said in a statement they'd "received information about behavior in our workplace that appears to have violated the organization's standards of conduct".

"The women never really knew when they were going to be sexually harassed", reporter and author Jessica Luther said. 'It might happen, but you don't play for it. I was like, 'Look, losing is our best option'.

"We are taking this opportunity to reiterate the NBA's commitment to providing employees with a safe and inclusive work environment".

The fine, while enormous to most people, is a mere drop in the bucket for Cuban.

'Obviously there's a problem in the Mavericks organization and we've got to fix it, ' Cuban told the magazine.

"This is all new to me", he said.

On Tuesday, the team announced that it had engaged outside counsel to investigate reports that its former president and chief executive, Terdema Ussery, had engaged in "various acts of inappropriate conduct toward women" during his tenure. Sneed was not allowed to be with any other woman in the organization or a business setting after the second incident, and he was also forbidden from dating coworkers, according to Cuban. He is mandating sensitivity training for all employees, himself included. The NBA says that it will be closely monitoring the investigation.

Also mentioned in the report is former team website reporter Earl Sneed, who was accused on multiple occasions of domestic violence, one of which he pleaded guilty to, before being fired.

He said he kept the writer, Earl Sneed, because he wanted to help him instead of letting him possibly inflict that kind of abuse on others. At the start of Wednesday's The Jump on ESPN, Rachel Nichols reflected on Sports Illustrated's report.
