Google Assistant to gain multilingual support, more languages & deeper device integrations

Phone carriers will also be able to develop their own custom integrations with Google Assistant. Google says these 30 languages will cover 95 percent of Android users.

However multilingual support will be somewhat limited at the start, where it will be only available in English, French, and German, but Google does plan to eventually expand language support to more languages in the future.

"In the next few months, we'll bring the Assistant to Danish, Dutch, Hindi, Indonesian, Norwegian, Swedish and Thai on Android phones and iPhones, and we'll add more languages on more devices throughout the year", Fox wrote.

Finally, Google announced today that more languages are gaining support in Assistant this year (more than 30, actually). This way, if you speak English at home, but German in the office, the virtual assistant will be able to understand you in both locations.

The assistant is only supposed to be activated with keywords such as "OK, Google", although there have been instances when the Home speaker has been caught listening when it was supposed to be turned off. Google Assistant can do many things from controlling your smart appliances to streaming audio, setting your alarm and more.

Google plans deeper Assistant integration with phones and wireless carriers

Lastly, with the Assistant Carrier program, mobile carriers will be able to provide customers with more information on their services via Assistant.

Google is also bringing two new features to Assistant, the looooong awaited Routines which was announced previous year, and Location based reminders.

Google Assistant Routines will allow users to program their Assistant to perform multiple tasks in a row following a single voice command. So, if you say "Hey Google, goodnight", to your Google Home, the Assistant could turn off the connected lights, lock the doors, and shut off the music in one fell swoop.

Meanwhile, the Routines feature unveiled a year ago is ready to roll out "in the coming weeks in the US", letting you use six routines to "help with your morning, commutes to and from work, and evening at home". This gives carriers a new way to support their customers while reducing response time.

Google isn't relying exclusively on compatibility to make Google Assistant popular, as it says it's working with OEM partners to make it easier to integrate it with their devices. For example, you can now ask Assistant to remind you to grab milk when you arrive at the grocery. Sprint, Koodo, Telus and Vodafone are the first to actively develop Assistant integrations, with many more "coming soon".
