Sheriff: 'Disgruntled student' allegedly overheard threatening to shoot at school

School in Whittier Calif. where a security guard allegedly overheard a disgruntled student threatening to shoot at the school

He made the comments at the El Camino High School in Whittier, two days after 17 people were killed when a gunman opened fire on a Florida high school.

The 17-year-old El Camino High School student, arrested Friday on suspicion of making criminal threats, did not have a weapon when he was confronted by the security guard.

A few hours after Chavez raised the alarm, Los Angeles County sheriff's investigators found a cache of firearms, including two semiautomatic rifles, two handguns and 90 high-capacity magazines, at his home, reported the Los Angeles Times.

McDonnell says the teen faces a charge of making criminal threats and the brother is accused of possession of an assault weapon and other violations. Robert Jacobsen, the in-house counsel for Norwalk La Mirada Unified School District, said the student was upset by the request made by a teacher and made the threatening comment Friday outside the classroom.

According to the principle of the school, students can not possess electronic devices while class is in sessions. One was registered to the man and another was unregistered, which is a felony in the state, McDonnell added.

Chavez said it was after lunch break and students were returning to class when he heard the threat about a school shooting within the next three weeks.

Los Angeles County sheriff's spokeswoman Nicole Nishida tells The Associated Press that deputies found "multiple guns and ammunition" after searching the student's home. Chavez says after the student said he'd only been joking, he told him: "I know you students say a lot of things".

"They felt there was enough there that they should call law enforcement so they can investigate further", Jacobsen said. His name was not released because he is a minor. An Army veteran, Barcenas claimed he got the guns while stationed in Texas, according to Deputy Martin Maciel.

The sheriff credited "attentive" school resource personnel - in particular the safety officer - as well as "diligent" investigators, with preventing what he said could have been a risky outcome.

McDonnell calls Chavez a hero.

Since the Florida school shooting on February 14, there have been 19 school-related threats in L.A. County that have been reported to the department's Criminal Intelligence Bureau, according to McDonnell.

"No, I'm not a hero, just doing my job", he said.

A driver in a School Saftey vehicle makes his way to the campus of El Camino High School in Whittier, California.

He said the day before, a teen told a parent about wanting a school administrator dead. She in turn reported it to authorities and the woman's son was detained, according to McDonnell.

But it said "We regularly review our Emergency plans for each site that includes responses to natural disasters, but also for intruders and threats on campus". "Please talk to your kids, no matter how young they are, about the challenges that we're all facing in society today".
