Nest's indoor Cam IQ security camera now features Google Assistant

Nest Cam IQ Google Assistant update makes camera a smart speaker

It is worth noting, though, that the outdoor versions of the security camera is not getting this particular update.

A new software update is on its way to the indoor Nest Cam IQ, and it adds Google Assistant to the gadget.

The Cam IQ will get the Google Assistant via an update to the Nest app, and while it's now the only product in Nest's lineup to support this feature, it's expected to expand to more Nest hardware as time goes on. "And the Google Assistant will add a whole new level of intelligence by helping answer questions, control your home, and manage tasks".

Even if Google's assistant does not eavesdrop, its presence on an indoor security camera is likely to focus more attention on the handling and protection of the data collected through internet-connected devices. Using the Google Assistant through the Nest Cam IQ indoor camera will be very similar to how one would use it through the Google Home or any other compatible device.

The move comes just two weeks after Nest moved back under Google's direct control after spending almost two and a half years as a separate company owned by the same parent, Alphabet Inc. A unusual exclusion given most people would love to cast their Nest Cam to their TV - perhaps in the next update.

It will, however, respond to the "Hey, Google" or "OK, Google" wake phrases and can perform basic Google searches, tell you about the temperature and weather, add appointments to your calendar, and more. Owners will also be able to control other Nest-branded smart home accessories.
