Turkey denies chemical weapons use in Syria

US cannot hide terror groups by changing their names'

A White House official says the United States thinks it is "extremely unlikely" Turkey used chemical weapons against the Kurds.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Friday released a report accusing Turkish forces of a chemical weapons attack in Afrin.

Syrian state news agency SANA, citing a doctor in a Afrin hospital, said Turkish shelling of the village caused choking in six people. The Britain-based war monitoring group said medical sources in Afrin reported that six people in the attack suffered breathing difficulties and dilated pupils, indicating a suspected gas attack.

Turkey's president also said some 60 Turkish-allied Syrian opposition fighters were killed since the beginning of the operation.

"The Afrin operation, and the Syrian war in general, have become a war of propaganda".

USA national security adviser H.R. McMaster, speaking at the Munich Security Conference on February 17, said public reports "clearly show" that Assad's forces are continuing to use chemical weapons.

Doctors in Syria spoke to several local and worldwide news outlets, claiming they had to treat six civilians after a Turkish shelling in Syria's Afrin region.

"We continue to call for restraint and the protection of civilians in Afrin", the official added.

The Turkish military repeated in a weekly statement published Saturday that it does not use internationally "banned ammunition" in its Afrin operation.

The Kurdish YPG militia, which has received arms from the United States, has seized swathes of northern Syria from ISIS during the conflict, and has a rival vision for the country's future to that of the Damascus government.

Syrian government forces will enter the northern region of Afrin on Monday following a deal with the Kurdish-led fighters who control it, a Syrian Kurdish politician told local media on Sunday.

The US support for SDF has infuriated Turkey and created the ongoing diplomatic crisis between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.
