Juan Mata Backs VAR Despite Seeing Goal Ruled Out

It is time for Romelu Lukaku to start scoring against the Premier League's best sides

Juan Mata celebrates a goal that is ruled out offside after VAR (Video Assistant Referee) is consulted.

The company that provided the freaky VAR images during Manchester United's 2-0 victory over Huddersfield on Saturday has apologised for the offside controversy.

In a statement, Hawkeye said: "A technical error led to an incorrect graphic being provided by Hawkeye to BT Sport on Saturday".

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has suggested he is happy for English football to adopt the VAR system, but only if the on-field referee makes the final decision whether to use the technology or not. I think it's needed, specifically when there is a clear decision that can change the game, like a goal, offside, red card, but hopefully it will be quicker.

Confusion was sparked by images released showing a series of wonky lines, which didn't shed any further light on the incident, supposedly used to make the decision.

During his hard patch Lukaku opted not to celebrate some of the goals he scored - apparently in frustration at the criticism aimed in his direction.

A brace from Romelu Lukaku helped United past Huddersfield as they moved into the quarter-finals.

"Yes, the decision went in our favour but this VAR for me kills the emotion of the game", said Wagner.

"I think it should be the referees to decide". I'm quite familiar with what the VAR is bringing that's good and bad.

"It was a good combination between two players who you can see haven't played too long together but you can see there is something special between them and that is always positive", Martinez said.

For a technology still under trial and very much novel to the footballing audience, perception is everything.

"Hopefully it will be quicker as well, but I think it will be good for football to be a bit more fair".

Mourinho made six changes in all from last weekend's shock reverse at St. James' Park, but his decision to retain Lukaku paid dividends when the Belgian burst onto Mata's pass to open the scoring inside three minutes.
