Pakistani man sentenced to death in in rape, murder of girl, 7

The verdict was announced by an anti-terrorism court in Lahore

Her body was found on a trash heap on January 9 in the city of Kasur near Lahore, four days after she was reported missing. The prosecutor informed the court that the forensic report and polygraph test proved that Imran murdered Zainab, reported Geo News. Her body was left in a rubbish dump.

On Wednesday, the lawyer representing Imran Ali withdrew from the case, saying that after the suspect's confession, his conscience can not permit him to represent a hardened criminal.

Her murder triggered outrage across the country, including riots against alleged police incompetence in which two protesters died.

It is the first time in Pakistan's history that a trial was completed in four days with 13-hour-long proceedings daily.

The court will announce the verdict in his presence.

"When he was read the charges, we asked the court to let Imran Ali deliberate the matter for 40 minutes", the prosecutor said.

On Monday, the anti-terrorism court on Monday indicted the prime accused in the Zainab rape case.

Zainab's brutal murder sparked anti-government demonstrations across the country.

A three-member prosecution team led by Abdul Rauf Wattoo assisted the court.

The killing sparked calls for the public execution of Ali after officials said his DNA had been recovered from the scene of the crime and matched samples from similar cases.

The horror of Zainab's killing in January was brought home for Pakistanis by a photo of her that went viral on social media, showing the smiling girl in her favourite bright pink coat, with a pink barrette holding back her hair. Ali has reportedly confessed to all the eight attacks.

After the police arrested Imran, the suspect reportedly confessed to assaulting eight minor girls at an under-construction site and two others in a garbage heap.

Zainab's mother Nusrat Bibi demanded he be executed in public.

At least two people have been arrested in connection with the ring, which police say abused hundreds of children in Kasur, Reuters reported. Meanwhile, accused counsel Mehr Shakeel decided not to plead the case after his confessional statement.
