NI Weather: Warning for heavy rain then snow and ice

Met √Čireann Issues Two Weather Warnings Affecting Kildare.

Wintry showers will strike too, with up to 3cm of snow in places as a snow-ice warning kicks in for the country. Rain and strong southerly winds will spread overnight.

The third alert for rain is in place for Connacht and counties Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal until midnight on Saturday.

Temperatures will also plunge down to -2 tonight.

A wind warning is in place for Munster, Leinster and Galway from 3pm this afternoon, with winds of 55 - 65km/h and gusts up to 110 km/h expected.

Met √Čireann have issued two status yellow weather warnings - including a countrywide snow-ice one - for this weekend.

Met Eireann says wintry showers will give accumulations of up to 3 cm of snow, with larger amounts on higher ground.

Met √Čireann said up to 25-35mm of rainfall is expected this evening.

Scattered heavy wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow will occur also with some accumulations of snow over high ground. As the rain clears to the east in the late evening snow will penetrate down to low levels.

As low pressure moves eastward into the North Sea, conditions will improve and brighten heading into Sunday, but temperatures will remain low in north-western regions.

The cold snap will continue into Monday with wintry showers overnight and frost and ice developing.

The temperatures will reach highs of 1C to 4C, with moderate to fresh westerly winds.

After a cold, bright and frosty start to the day, gales may develop along the south coast, with a minimum temperature of 0 degrees Celsius.
