Amazon Making a Big Change to Please Cheap Phone Buyers

Starting tomorrow, February 7th, Amazon is no longer forcing these ads on Prime Exclusive buyers. In fact, you'll even be able to change the background of the lock screen. Amazon says things like facial recognition and fingerprint readers have basically made the lock screen obsolete, therefore creating a space on a smartphone that's everything less than ideal to display ads on. However, because Amazon doesn't plan to serve up ads any longer, Phonescooper has claimed Amazon will raise the cost of all Prime Exclusive phones by $20 starting 7 February. Going forward, new phones from the program will ship without lockscreen offers and ads, and customers who already own a Prime Exclusive Phone will receive a free software update that will remove the ads this week. Ads that hijack your lock screen can sometimes preclude that.

Furthermore, you will be able to customise the lock screen wallpaper on your Prime Exclusive phones - something that was not allowed before in order to make room for ads. "Customers who now use a Prime Exclusive Phone will receive a free update starting this week with this change, which will remove the lockscreen offers and ads". That was announced in December and since the preloaded apps on Prime Exclusive devices are distributed through Google Play, Amazon has no choice but to abide by the new rules. As a result of all this, Amazon has had to re-think its phone program. Prime members will still enjoy a single sign-on experience, have access to pre-installed Amazon apps and services, take advantage of free unlimited photo storage through Prime Photos, and more. The company just lost the biggest revenue stream from these devices, and we've got to believe the current prices were set with that revenue stream in mind.
