Alexa Can Send SMS Messages Now

Don't be tempted to give your speakers amusing names- you'll regret later

The rapper dropped a teaser for the new ad, and it's as hilarious as you'd expect.

Alexa can now switch to a British accent, as well as, German. In 2016, eight months after Echo's launch, Amazon splashed out on its very first Super Bowl ad, putting the smart speaker (oh, and Alec Baldwin) front and center.

In order to use the SMS feature, one needs to follow the instructions which appear on a pop-up in the Alexa app. That's the one caveat.

Other voice assistants like Apple's Siri and Google Assistant can send SMS texts from iOS and Android smartphones. The message could be sent via SMS messages to the already existing Alexa messaging service.

How do you enable the SMS texting feature?

The company also confirmed that it will be making the feature available internationally at some point in the future, but didn't say exactly when. You then can enable "Send an SMS".

How do you actually send an SMS via Alexa?

Some Alexa-powered devices, such as the Echo Show have the ability to do video calls as well.

If you own an Echo or another Alexa-powered speaker, saying "Alexa, send a message" will now let you send SMS messages from your phone number to whatever recipient you'd like. You'll be informed that the message has been sent, but it won't be read back before it's carried away. You'll be able to catch the ad air live during the Super Bowl on February 4, 2018, but other than that, we don't know when Alexa's new voice will go live.

The feature will only work if you have the Alexa app installed on an Android phone, and have linked your phone to your Alexa device. It is expected that all three accents would be available to USA users in the near future.
