Google removed 700000 bad apps from the Play Store a year ago

Google Play Downloads Hit Record High in Q4 Leads App Store by 145 Percent App Annie

In efforts to keep you, and everyone using Android safe, Google remove over 700,000 apps from the Play Store last year, that's 70% more than last year. Famous titles get a lot of search traffic for particular keywords, so the bad actors try to amass installs leveraging such traffic. Google Play is far from ideal, but it is now one of the best and safest places to find apps and games with Google having a vested interest in constant vigilance when it comes to distributing apps. Machine learning enabled Google to eliminate 99 percent of apps with abusive content before anyone was able to download them. The app is available on Google Play for all Android devices.

When it fails, and it will fail sometimes, Google's director of Android security, Adrian Ludwig, explained to ComputerWorld's J.R. Raphael: "The challenge that all detection technology runs into, inclusive of Google Play Protect, is when we see a completely new family coming from a different environment - especially if [the apps] are on the borderline of behavior that might be considered to be potentially harmful and not quite potentially harmful". From keeping those apps from ever making it onto the service, to removing them if they actually do make it through, the company has its hands full.

Google in its part credits this success to its improved ability to detect abuse "through new machine learning models and techniques".

Andrew Ahn, the product manager for Google Play, said in a statement that over 99 percent of the malicious apps were rejected before they could be downloaded or installed by users.

According to Ahn, copycat apps are usually created to resemble popular mainstream apps and is a popular method of deceiving users. Google took down more than 250,000 of these apps in the a year ago. Other malicious apps that Google removed included those called PHAs. As Google finds and shuts down one category, though, another pops up sooner or later. That's roughly twice global consumer spending on apps and in the Play store, which reached $5.5 billion with annual growth of 20%. Some forms of abuse are nearly impossible for Google to detect, after all, especially now that a lot of the code for apps runs on backend systems that Google has no control over. In 2014, the market volume for apps was Euro 909 million.

How many of you have got the latest version of the Google App?

In the end, though, there'll always be some apps that slips through the net.
