Armenian Man Killed by Turkish Shelling in Afrin

Armenian man killed in Turkish shelling of Afrin

Turkey has intensified pressure against the Kurdish minority since the summer of 2015.

The Russia-sponsored conference opened in the Black Sea resort of Sochi after a two-hour delay, after some members of rebel groups returned to the airport in protest.

The Kurdish proposal provides for "the return of Syrian border guards and the raising of the Syrian flag at the border to reassure the Turks", said Ahed Al-Hendi, a senior adviser to the Kurdish administration.

"We can confidently say that all the suitable circumstances to end the painful page in the history of the Syrian people are present", Lavrov said.

Last week, United Nations -sponsored talks in Vienna, Austria, ended as in many previous rounds with accusations hurled back and forth to the media between the representatives of the warring sides in Syria.

The Sochi gathering has been overshadowed by reports of intense clashes that erupted on Monday on a strategic hilltop in northwestern Syria as Kurdish forces tried to enter the area a day after it was captured by Turkish troops.

Turkish authorities have cracked down on public expressions of dissent about the ground offensive against the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia.

The initial focus on the Turkish assault has been in the Afrin border region.

A Turkish prosecutor ordered the detention of the head of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) and 10 other leaders of the doctors' union on Tuesday, after the body criticised Turkey's military operation in north Syria.

The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office issued detention warrants for the 11 members of the council early on January 30.

Turkey considers the YPG to be a terrorist group and fears the empowerment of Syria's Kurds could be contagious.

Rosher Konis, an Armenian man whose family has lived in the Syrian region of Afrin since his ancestors escaped the Genocide, was reportedly killed last week after the Turkey launched an attack in its continuing campaign against Syria.

"We lost five servicemen during Operation Olive Branch".

Some analysts also argued that Damascus was allowing Turkey to conduct military operations on its soil because a few more days of Kurdish losses would serve its interests.
