Apple Wants More Ebook Market, Hire's Amazon's Audible VP

Apple-Books-Revamp-iOS-11-3

The changes that Apple is implementing to iBooks are similar to the things it did to iTunes and iTunes Podcasts that are now called Apple Music and Apple Podcasts, respectively. The redesigned iBooks is slated for release in the coming months, so it's still to early to tell if Apple's new Books app will put a dent in Amazon's ebooks sales.

Apple has been quiet in the digital book market ever since it was hit with a $450 million fine in 2016.

Gurman pointed out that the "Apple Books Store" rebranding appears to be a strategy by which Apple hopes to regain its footing in the the e-books market - a category dominated by e-commerce giant, Amazon - in the wake of its previous fallout with the U.S. Department of Justice. If the new report is true, Apple's push to modernize iBooks could significantly increase the level of competition in online books.

According to a new Bloomberg report, sources familiar with the matter said the iPhone maker is quietly working on a major upgrade of the app, which could play a key role in its growth plans. But Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook has pledged that services will generate about $50 billion in annual revenue by 2021, up from $30 billion past year.

The redesigned app is reportedly going to have a simpler interface that better highlights the books now being read and a dedicated tab for audiobooks.

However as recent data shows Amazon almost monopolizing the US e-books market, Apple appears ready and willing to jump back in and reclaim its former, competitive edge. But now, Apple is putting books front and center with a renamed app and a much-needed redesign, according to Bloomberg. Many industry participants questioned the ruling in the case, since it obviously favored Amazon.

Apple recently tapped a new executive to lead the revived Books effort. We've reached out to Apple for comment on what the app refresh will entail. Amazon churns out new versions of Kindle devices at or near to cost and tries to make money selling content.
