Blood moon 2018: Everything you need to know to see it

It will also be a blue moon because it's the second full moon in the calendar month.

The last Blue Moon total lunar eclipse visible from India was in 1963 and the next one will be in 2028, said a press release. From 11:00 a.m. ET, the website will also host a live stream of the non-eclipsed super blue moon rising over the skyline of Rome.

(MENAFN - The Conversation), there will be a full moon, a total lunar eclipse, a blue moon and a supermoon - all at the same time.

Claimed to have been last witnessed over 150 years ago on March 31, 1866, the skies will surely be a treat for sore eyes with the super blue blood moon!

"For the [continental] US, the survey will be best in the West", Gordon Johnston, program official and lunar blogger at NASA home office in Washington, said in the announcement. As of now, the moon will go through the lighter piece of Earth's external shadow, or the penumbra.

If you are in the Eastern or Central time zone, Johnston recommends watching from a high place with a clear view to the West to catch a glimpse of the moon's reddish hue. We already had one on the first of this month and our second will be January 31, making it a blue moon. If things are just right, the moon passes through that shadow.

"Sadly, obscure survey will be all the more hard in the Eastern Time zone", Johnston said in the announcement. "The next full "supermoon" will appear only 7% bigger and a bit brighter than an average full Moon", said Italian astrophysicist, Gianluca Masi in a statement.

Johnston adds that the country's Eastern time zone will have the most trouble seeing the eclipse on January 31, which begins at 5:51 a.m. ET. Instead of sunlight reflecting on the moon's surface, Earth's shadow falls on it. The eclipse ends with sunrise around 7:26 a.m.

You can check if your nearest city will experience the eclipse using this interactive lunar eclipse model.

At about 4:51 a.m. the lighter part of the Earth's shadow, referred to as the penumbra, will touch the moon, and around 6:15 a.m. the Earth will cast a red-hued shadow that will be clearly visible on the moon. For example, if an eclipse takes place shortly after a volcanic eruption, the particles in the atmosphere will make the moon look darker than usual.
