Amazon move to Nashville could benefit Wilson County

The 20 cities still in the running for Amazon's second headquarters

Amazon has said the second headquarters would be a "full equal" to its Seattle campus.

The Seattle-based e-commerce giant's search for a location for a second North American headquarters set off a frenzy among city officials jostling for the economic boost such a project represents, with some of the 238 initial bidders promising billions of dollars in tax breaks.

By that standard, Raleigh, which Milken named the No. 2 USA city for creating and keeping quality jobs, topped the institute's assessment of the finalists, beating out such cities as Dallas, Nashville, Austin and Atlanta.

"Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough - all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity", Holly Sullivan of Amazon Public Policy said in a statement. The announcement comes almost three months after Miami submitted its proposal to bring the company's hub to South Florida.

Amazon evaluated each of the proposals based on the criteria outlined in the RFP to create the list of 20 HQ2 candidates that will continue in the selection process. One site was in Bradford West Gwillimbury and the other was in Innisfil.

Some Las Vegas and online bookmakers, such as Bovada, have Nashville as the favorite to land the project, followed by Washington D.C. and Atlanta.

"When you have a project of that size, there's certainly going to be suppliers and other industries that come with it", Hixson said. Amazon is expecting to start building HQ2 in 2019 with a target completion by 2027.

The shortlist news follows Apple's announcement on Wednesday that it would build a new USA campus and create 20,000 new jobs as part of a $30 billion investment, with both underlining the growing power of US technology companies over the economy.

"I don't think that violence was actually the determining factor", she said.

"If you have low crime, low taxes, low regulation, a good infrastructure and you have, more than anything, a great educational system, we will not have a single problem luring all the businesses and all the people in this country here", says Corcoran.

Amazon will make a final decision later this year.
