Russian Federation offers platform for direct Afghan-Taliban talks

President Trump Is Pushing Pakistan Away From the U.S

Russian Foreign Minister has acknowledged Pakistan's efforts in eradicating terrorism saying militants spread inside Afghanistan along the area bordering Pakistan pose a grave threat.

While talks will be Afghan-led, Kabul did request that the Security Council weigh in to bring Pakistan on board.

Wells said: "It is inaccurate to say that the Taliban have occupied 43 per cent of Afghanistan's territory; they have occupied only 12 per cent territory of Afghanistan".

The Afghan government is making strides towards stability, she said, and "continues to make ten steps forward and with Pakistan they feel like they continue to take steps backward". Pakistan denies providing sanctuary for the Taliban.

United Nations, Jan 17 The UN Security Council should step up pressure on Pakistan to "change its behaviour", US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley today said. "We will also fight the terrorists who are standing against Pakistan".

This apart, United States also suspended additional aid of $ 2 billion to Pakistan.

According to a VOA report quoting local media, a three-member Taliban delegation headed by Shahabuddin Dilawar, who is also a senior member of the Doha office, is now in Islamabad.

Reuters reported that a second back-channel meeting occurred over the weekend in Turkey, where it said individuals with Taliban connections met with representatives of Hizb-i Islami, the party of a former Taliban-allied commander who previous year laid down arms to join Afghan politics. But both the government and the Taliban have tried to distance themselves from the Turkey meeting.

Sources privy of the development within the Taliban ranks have told Reuters that supreme leader Haibatullah Akhundzada had approved Monday's exploratory meeting in Islamabad on restarting talks to end the war that kills thousands of Afghans each year.
