Drone rescues teenagers from drowning in 'world first'

Drone saves drowning boys in a world first on the NSW North Coast

A beach goer spotted the two teenagers struggling off the coast of Lennox Head beach, in New South Wales state north of Sydney on Thursday and reported them to the lifeguards.

Lifeguards were getting to grips with the Litle Ripper drone as part of the NSW government's shark mitigation strategy, when a distress call came through reporting two swimmers in trouble.

Lifesavers then sent the drone to drop an inflatable rescue pod, enabling the swimmers to escape the danger and make it safely to shore.

Ben Franklin, parliamentary secretary for Northern New South Wales, while also reacting to the incident, said it took the drone 70 seconds to respond, compared to the six minutes it usually takes a lifeguard to rescue swimmers.

Little Rippers put an emphasis on facial detection.

Jai Sheridan, the 2017 NSW Lifeguard of the Year, piloted the rescue drone, and said it was "a delight to fly".

The state government committed $430,000 to a trial of the drones off the North Coast in December past year. It's quite a simple, but very effective idea that illustrates perhaps the best example of how drones can and should be used to get to places that humans can't t deliver some life-saving equipment. Not only could drone technology keep a watchful eye on swimmers from a greater vantage point than, say, a kayak, the device may be able to reach a struggling open water swimmer with greater speed.

John Barilaro, the state's deputy premier, praised the rescue as historic.

He steered the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which is equipped with a flotation pod that can be dropped into the sea, toward the swimmers, who were about half a mile away.

A couple of swimmers were saved from the raging waves in New South Wales, thanks to a swift reaction by a rescue team and a cargo drone, Channel News Asia reports.
