Walmart is stepping up to help mitigate the opioid crisis with an innovative new product that will make it easier to safely dispose of prescription meds.
Walmart is helping customers get rid of leftover opioids by giving them packets that turn the addictive painkillers into a useless gel. Pills are, dissolved by the packet, referred to as DisposeRx to some gel that was biodegradable.
Patients filling a new prescription for a Class II opioid, such as oxycodone and methadone, will receive a free DisposeRX packet and an opioid safety brochure.
The product, a powder called DisposeRX, is meant to be used by customers who no longer need their prescription painkillers or are concerned that someone else might take their pills.
"The health and safety of our patients is a critical priority; that's why we're taking an active role in fighting our nation's opioid issue - an issue that has affected so many families and communities across America", explained Marybeth Hays, EVP of consumables and health and wellness at Walmart U.S. Existing pharmacy patients can also request a free DisposeRx packet at any time, including at the upcoming Walmart Wellness Day event scheduled for January 20 from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. all Walmart locations nationwide.
In a release, Walmart referenced information from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the National Institute of Drug Abuse that shows more than 65 percent of people who misuse prescription opioids acquire them from friends and family.
Wal Mart (WMT) now distributes safety brochures with prescriptions and offers to counsel on safe opioid usage.
The unique DisposeRx packets contain a crosslinking polymer blend. The company also will offer a packet every six months to patients with a regular opioid prescription.
Although the offer of DisposeRX for free is coming as a result of the opioid epidemic, the product works on any type of prescription drug, according to Holaday.
