A 6-Year-Old Boy Who Got Infected With Rabies Died

6-Year-Old Orlando Boy With Rabies Fights for Life

Ryker Roque's father confirmed to NBC that his son died on Sunday at an Orlando-area hospital where he was placed in a medically induced coma in the hopes of saving him from the virus.

Ryker was scratched by the bat, but seemed fine, school officials said.

Six-year-old boy dies from rabies he contracted after being scratched by an infected bat. He put the bat in a bucket and told his son not to touch it.

They knew they had to take the boy to the hospital, but Ryker started crying thinking that he's going to get shots.

If it's too late to give an infected person the vaccine, some doctors have tried an experimental treatment called the Milwaukee Protocol.

The treatment has only worked twice in the USA and 18 times around the world.

A week later, the boy complained of having a headache and that his fingers were numb.

Roque anxious his son may have hit his head while playing and rushed him to the hospital where he mentioned the bat to doctors.

"I mean, alarms, bells, whistles went off", he said. "We had a conference and they explained to me that it's nearly always lethal", Henry said.

A GoFundMe account was also set up for the family.

After that point, the disease has reached the person's brain and is next to impossible to stop.

The vaccine is effective if taken shortly after transmission, but once symptoms are present, rabies is almost impossible to survive.

Willoughby's relatively new method of treatment for the disease has worked in some cases in the past.

The Milwaukee protocol (MP) is a procedure to prevent death after the onset of rabies symptoms as a back up if the vaccination is not given in time.

It was developed by Rodney Willoughby in 2004 when successfully performed on 15-year-old Jeanna Giese from Wisconsin.

The treatment involves putting the patient into a coma while administering a cocktail of anti-viral drugs and drugs to reduce brain activity including ketamine, benzodiazepines and amantadine.
