Passenger With Measles Flew Through Chicago's O'Hare

Passenger With Measles May Have Exposed Others at O'Hare

State health officials are advising anyone who was at the airport that day who is not vaccinated against the highly contagious disease to see a doctor immediately.

An infected passenger arrived at the airport's Terminal 5 on Wednesday morning and departed aboard a domestic flight from Terminal 1.

Last week, a female college student traveling from Mumbai, India, traveling to Indianapolis International Airport by way of Newark Liberty International Airport, was confirmed to have been diagnosed with measles.

Health officials say those who may have been exposed are travelers who were at the airport that day between 6:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said it's possible that symptoms may not show, for those who may have been affected by the passenger at Chicago O'Hare, until as late as January 31.

Local health departments are working to notify IL residents who were identified as being potentially exposed on the ill person's flights.

Travelers should look out for common symptoms of measles. The rash generally appears about 14 days after exposure. If they were infected, symptoms could develop as late as the end of the month.

Hospitalization is needed for both cases. If you have been exposed, you are at risk if you have not been vaccinated or have not had measles. If you develop symptoms of measles, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) recommends you call a health care provider before going to a medical office or emergency department. She also encourages all family members to update their measles/mumps/rubella vaccination.
