The woman, Jeanette LeBlanc, went crabbing with her friends and family on the coast of Louisiana in September, according to CBS News. One of their friends named Karen Bowers said both she and LeBlanc ate about two dozens of raw oysters.

"It was just too much for her".

Within the next 12 hours, LeBlanc became seriously ill.

Doctors then discovered that she was infected with the flesh-eating bacteria named Vibrio.

Offered Bergquist, 'It's a flesh-eating bacteria.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, vibrio can enter a person's system through uncooked or undercooked shellfish, or by exposing open wounds to saltwater. For the next 21 days, she fought for her life.

Typical symptoms of vibriosis include diarrhea, nausea, fever, and chills. Severe cases like LeBlanc's can result in death. In addition, the bacteria tends to multiply in warm waters, so the shellfish from the Gulf of Mexico and other warm waters tend to contain a large amount of the bacteria.

Jeanette wasn't able to recover and died on October 15 2017.

"I can't even imagine going through that for 21 days".

The Vibrio bacteria can be found in the waters of coastal areas.

Bergquist and Bowers are now talking to the media to raise awareness about the potential risk of eating raw oysters.

"If we had known that the risk was so high, I think she would've stopped eating oysters", Bergquist said.

Jeanette LeBlancRare flesh eating disease also known as necrotising fasciitis and how it can create havoc.

After a short period of time, LeBlanc started feeling sick.

Adding, 'It can start from a relatively minor injury, such as a small cut or insect bite when bacteria enters a wound. Typically, around 200 people a year across the country contract the bacteria. It also causes about 80,000 illnesses, 52,000 of which are from eating contaminated seafood such as raw oysters. The infection gets worse very quickly and can be fatal if it's not recognised and treated early on. The more serious illnesses involve bloodstream infections, severe rashes, and skin lesions.

Jeanette LeBlanc: at first it appeared as a rash, but matters continued to degenerate...

Lopez says it's important to know that cases like Leblanc's are rare.
