How High Doses of Ibuprofen May Impact Male Infertility

Ibuprofen Might Cause Male Infertility Study Shows 0 By Denis Bedoya

Ibuprofen, also known as an non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has a negative impact on the testicles of young men, according to CNN.

Advil and Motrin are two brand names for ibuprofen, which can be bought over-the-counter as a pain reliever, and is typically used by athletes. Hypogonadism is associated with impaired fertility, depression, heart failure, and stroke. This repression results in the elevation of the stimulatory pituitary hormones, resulting in a state of compensated hypogonadism, a disorder associated with adverse reproductive and physical health disorders.

Bernard J├ęgou, a senior author on the study at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research, said that he believes that there is no problem in people taking ibuprofen to alleviate pain in the short term but he warns against taking the drug for months on end if it was not absolutely necessary. It didn't take long - just two weeks - for the drug to disrupt the hormonal balance and rate of testosterone production of these men.

Fortunately, the condition went away in the volunteers when they stopped taking the medication. This is more common in older men than younger ones.

The human brain compensates for testosterone deficiency by producing luteinizing hormone (LH), which sends a signal to the testicles to produce more testosterone.

Researchers published their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, noting that consumption of ibuprofen resulted in "compensated hypogonadism", a condition in which men have normal levels of testosterone but higher levels of the luteinizing hormone, which stimulates the production of testosterone, The International Study for Sexual Medicine said. "This study should give pause for thought to sportsmen using them routinely for exercise-induced aches and pains".

"However, this is now speculative".

Erma Z. Drobnis, a University of Missouri, Columbia, professor who specializes in fertility, says this study is important, given how common ibuprofen is, even with such a small sample size.

The study was first tested on women, according to CNN. But they said they were anxious about the effect of ibuprofen on the fertility of long-term users, such as athletes. A growing number of studies shed light on concerning health issues that may arise from NSAIDs and ibuprofen in particular.

To avoid these side-effects, doctors caution against taking Ibuprofen for more longer than ten days in a row, per the FDA's warning.
