Trump says U.S. has gotten 'nothing' from Pakistan aid

Trump Accuses Pakistan Of 'Lies And Deceit,' Threatens To Pull Billions In Aid

However, Vice President Mike Pence told troops at Bagram airfield in Afghanistan on December 21 that Trump had "put Pakistan on notice" that it "has much to lose from continuing to harbor terrorists".

Reacting to Trump's accusations, Pakistan government said the "US should not put blames for its failure in Afghanistan on Pakistan".

In a tweet on Monday, Trump said the U.S. had foolishly given Pakistan more that $33 billion in aid since 2012 and received nothing but lies and deceit.

The US, which has provided Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid since 2002, said in August that it was withholding the $255 million until Pakistan did more to crack down on terrorist groups.

Last month, Trump hinted that he could cut off the aid. Pakistani security forces rescued American hostage Caitlan Coleman, her Canadian husband, Joshua Boyle, and their three children born during the five years they spent in captivity.

Having hosted a New Year's Eve Party, US President Donald Trump was up early at his winter home in Palm Beach, Florida, and ready to kick off 2018 with a fresh batch of acerbic tweets.

The group was responsible for kidnapping a Canadian-American couple and holding them from 2012 to 2017, when Pakistani forces secured their release in what they said was as a rescue operation but some U.S. officials reportedly described as a "negotiated handover".

The President last August demanded Pakistan "change immediately" its practice of giving safe haven to terror groups including the Taliban, which have assaulted US forces based in neighboring Afghanistan.

Trump hailed their return as a clear sign of progress, but his attitude has since hardened.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said he would respond to the US President's tweet shortly after the latter blamed the country for providing safe havens to terrorists. "They have to help", the United States president said.

"Pak as anti-terror ally has given free to US: Land&air communication, military bases&intel cooperation that decimated Al-Qaeda over last 16yrs, but they have given us nothing but invective & mistrust".

Trump said Sunday that the stock market will continue to rise and that companies are going to continue to come into the US, at "a rapid clip".

In countering USA criticism, Pakistan says it has launched military operations to push out militants from its soil and that 17,000 Pakistanis have died fighting militants or in bombings and other attacks since 2001. And we make massive payments every year to Pakistan.

The remarks triggered a series of high-level diplomatic meetings in the United States and Pakistan, but Islamabad has given few signs of concessions.
