First Supermoon Of 2018 Happens On New Year's Day

On Jan. 1, the full moon will be at its closest orbit around Earth - NASA explains that means it will be about 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than normal. Space.com reports that the first supermoon of the year is nicknamed Wolf Moon, and will peak at 9:24 p.m. ET. It'll be the first of 2018 and it will be closely followed by another just weeks later.

They don't necessarily appear all that different from regular full moons, but this one is special because it's one of three happening in a row - and the super blue moon on January 31 will also coincide with a lunar eclipse.

In short, stargazers are in for a treat this coming New Year's Day thanks to the second supermoon that's coinciding with the event, but the third supermoon on January 31 is arguably the moon that people can't afford to miss.

Native Americans knew the full moon of January as the Wolf Moon, a time when wolves roamed the edges of the village in search of whatever food they might find. The moon will be 223,068 miles, 358,994 in km from Earth.

But before that comes the Wolf Moon, the first "Supermoon" of 2018 when the moon appears bigger and brighter in the sky. Lunar eclipses happen when the moon goes into the shadow of the Earth, and supermoons happen when the moon's perigee (its nearest way to the Earth in a single orbit) concurs with a full moon. The ideal time to encounter the Full Moon Supermoon is after moonrise when it is just above the skyline.

You'll have another chance to catch a supermoon on January 31.

And as a post by NASA on the "supermoon trilogy" explains, the January 31 supermoon will be definitely worth taking a look at.

Supermoons occur due to the fact that the moon is in a slightly elliptical orbit with Earth, rather than a ideal circle. The supermoon at the end of the month will be the second full moon of the month, which is called a blue moon.

That celestial event will be visible from western North America through the Pacific Ocean to eastern Asia, NASA says.

On Jan. 31, a supermoon will appear in the sky along with a lunar eclipse. "Will have to get up in the morning to see it, but it's another great chance to watch the Moon".
