The US is considering a limited strike on North Korea to give Kim Jong Un a metaphorical "bloody nose", The Telegraph reported, citing "well-placed" sources in the Trump administration. And now North Korea is vowing to retaliate.

According to a new report in the Daily Telegraph, the concerns about a United States attack on North Korea are very well-founded, and the White House has "dramatically" stepped up plans for what it is calling a "bloody nose" attack on North Korea.

The North kept its firm stance against US President Donald Trump's administration, calling the allegation a serious political provocation to damage the country's image.

The May attack encrypted files on more than 300,000 computers in 150 countries, with victims including hospitals, banks, telecommunications companies and warehouses.

North Korea had not tested a missile in more than two months - odd, considering the regime led by dictator Kim Jong Un has conducted now-16 missile tests this year alone, and also launched a nuclear bomb.

Neither the White House nor North Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately responded to CNET's request for comment.

Video: Why was the WannaCry ransomware attack so widespread? "We do so with evidence, and we do so with partners".

On Tuesday the United Kingdom came out in support of the U.S. accusations.

The Foreign Office Minister Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon has attributed the WannaCry ransomware incident to North Korean actors the Lazarus Group.

We condemn these actions and commit ourselves to working with all responsible states to combat destructive criminal use of cyber space.

Facebook and Microsoft staving off enemy attacks either paints a rosy yet fearsome portrait of tech companies today or a rather dismaying one of national security - or perhaps a little of both.

The attack exploited a Windows vulnerability that was originally developed by the US National Security Agency, but was released in a stolen cache of NSA cyberweapons by a hacking group known as the Shadow Brokers.
