Facebook Report Shows Major Spike In Government's User Data Requests

The government had in the said period, made a total of 44 requests for information on 44 Facebook account holders.

The ninth Facebook transparency report showed that governments' requests for information about users increased 21 percent worldwide compared to the second half of 2016, from 64,279 to 78,890.

As part of the transparency report, Facebook also showed government requests for account data, content restrictions and internet disruptions. Facebook also revealed that at least 50% of the requests from each of these countries was granted, including 85% for the USA, 90% for the United Kingdom and 74% for France. For the second half of 2016, content was restricted only around 7000 times, suggesting a fourfold increase in the takedown requests, notes The Verge.

Law enforcement authorities are permitted to confidentially request personal data from Facebook to obtain account details ranging from IP addresses, photos, messages, credit card details and email addresses.

Mr Sonderby said Facebook tried to ensure it handed over as little data as possible.

Authorities in India, the second largest source of Facebook user data requests, filed 9,853 requests for 13,752 accounts.

Content removal requests for violating local law rose a massive 304 percent globally, from 6,944 to 28,036, however this was due largely to a video of school shooting in Mexico in January.

Even though Facebook has 241 million active users in India compared with 240 million in the United States, the company received 57% of the data requests we received from law enforcement in the United States contained a non-disclosure order that prohibited us from notifying the user. The non-disclosure orders climbed from 50 percent in the prior six months and 56 percent in the first half of 2016. If a request appears to be deficient or overly broad, Facebook "push back, and will fight in court, if necessary".

When responding to requests, the company follows guidelines that are based on its own company policy and adapted to the relevant country's laws. Around 70,000 requests for copyright were submitted to Instagram, with 685,000 posts removed.

The majority of those restrictions - about 20,506 - came from a request to pull down a video depicting a 15-year-old student shooting at his teacher and students in Monterrey. On Instagram, the company removed 10,094 posts following 10,231 counterfeit claims.
