Vivo Will Offer First Phone With In-Display Fingerprint Sensor

Vivo not Samsung will have the first phone with in-screen fingerprint scanner

While I expect the likes of Samsung, LG, and Google to jump at the chance of hiding a fingerprint sensor under a smartphone's display, it seems none of them will be doing it first. As it is, the OEM in question is Vivo, but we still don't know the exact phone that will be the first to use this technology. Placing the fingerprint sensor on the rear is vaguely generic.

"Consumers prefer fingerprint authentication on the front of the phone, and with the industry quickly shifting to bezel-free OLED infinity displays, the natural placement of the fingerprint sensor is in the display itself", Kevin Barber, senior vice president, and general manager, Mobile Division, Synaptics said in a statement.

There's an arms race between Apple, Samsung, and other phone makers to move away from physical fingerprint scanners to unlock your phone, to ones that can sit under the screen. The phone will come from Vivo who, while isn't entirely popular in the United States, will likely make its name known across the industry as the first to embed a fingerprint reader in a display. The Clear ID experience was "fast and simple", says Moorhead. It's the reason we're seeing Face ID on the iPhone X and this horribly placed fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy S8 and Note 8. Many users still prefer using their fingerprint instead of iris scans and facial recognition, which doesn't work if the phone is off to the side on a table or desk.

An article written by Patrick Moorhead for Forbes explains what it's like to use the reader. "Synaptics' Clear ID fingerprint sensors are faster, more convenient, and more secure than alternative biometrics, and this optical technology represents a major innovation shift and opportunity for the smartphone market". At the Shanghai MWC 2017 event held towards the end of the same month, Qualcomm, the largest smartphone chipset maker in the world, confirmed that indeed Vivo will launch a smartphone with an in-display fingerprint scanner in early 2018.

Apple reportedly tried to put the feature into its $999/£999 iPhone X but didn't have the tech ready in time. It is unclear whether Vivo will continue its partnership with the San Diego, California-based chipmaker as Synaptics' technology is offering a similar and seemingly faster solution.
