Google reveals what searchers wanted most in 2017

Google has released its annual list of top search trends, based on searches that had a high spike in traffic in 2017 as compared to 2016.

This was the year of #MeToo and hurricanes.

Late South African actor and singer Dumi Masilela has topped the 2017's biggest Google searches in South Africa.

What were the trendiest search terms in Boston during 2017?

Hurricanes Irma and Harvey took the first and eighth spots in the Top 10, and August's much-hyped solar eclipse came in at No. 7. Former NBC anchor Matt Lauer hit No. 2 overall and was the top person search in general.

What does a cricket-mad nation obsessed with movies search for on Google? So popular search queries give us a good look into what people were thinking about over the past year.

And surprisingly, the making of slime was the most searched for How to. question.

As for this year, it was a moment of reckoning for powerful men behaving badly.

Other people on the top global list include Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Gal Gadot and Melania Trump. The movement spawned a widely shared hashtag, #MeToo, used by women to demonstrate the far-reaching prevalence of sexual harassment. Markle recently announced her engagement to Prince Harry.

We were also similarly interested in Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean, which came in sixth.

The crunch Ireland v Denmark soccer fixture also grabbed people's attention, ranking third in searches ahead of 13 Reasons Why and the kids craze of the year, Fidget Spinner.
