United States ambassador to United Kingdom predicts Trump visit in the new year

Johnson said the prime minister had been Trump's first visitor in the Oval Office once he took over the seat from President Barack Obama in January and was "the first official foreign leader to visit".

"And so if you look at the context of that, that's what he's trying to do".

Johnson said he was hopeful about the prospects of a visit.

Mr Trump also retweeted a video of a Muslim man "destroy (ing) a statue of Virgin Mary", and another where Britain First deputy leader Jayda Fransen - who has previously been convicted of religiously aggravated harassment - to wrote: 'Islamist mob pushed teenage boy off roof and beats him to death!' The provenance of the footage is unknown. He added that the president is not weak about tackling terrorism.

"I think he will come", Johnson told the BBC's Today program.

Johnson said the new embassy would need to be dedicated by an American president.

"It is protecting Americans here and the US".

"Is he going to be flawless in appeasing everybody?"

"I mean he's gonna come out, he's gonna probably take some chances in an effort to do that, to accomplish that security goal". "There's no question that maybe some feathers were ruffled", he said. It's protecting Americans here and the US.

"I'll be wearing shocking pink if Donald Trump comes to Britain to show my support for the women's march and recognising that, for goodness sake, this country wouldn't let Martha Stewart in because we said it wasn't conducive to the public good".

There has been speculation in the British media that instead of a full-scale state occasion involving a banquet hosted by the Queen, Trump's first official trip to the United Kingdom could take the form of a lower-key "working visit".

In June, Trump criticised the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, for his response to the London Bridge terror attack, misquoting Khan's message to Londoners not to be alarmed by the increased presence of armed police.
