A look at the California wildfires' jaw-dropping numbers

The Thomas Fire was 15 percent contained and the Skirball Fire in Los Angeles was 75 percent contained, while the Creek and Rye Fires in Los Angeles County were 80 percent and 65 percent contained, officials said.

This week's fires have destroyed almost 800 buildings, mostly in Ventura County where the Thomas Fire, the largest blaze, erupted on Monday.

"This fire literally started on the first day of our Santa Ana wind event, which it couldn't have started on a worse day", said Capt. Steve Kaufmann of the Ventura County Fire Department.

The new blazes have triggered the evacuation of nearly 100,000 people, killed at least one person, razed some 1,000 buildings, and scorched more than 250,000 acres of land.

Thick smoke and intense heat make it hard for low-flying aircraft to capture the extent of a wildfire's damage.

That's the size of the Thomas fire, the largest fire ripping across Southern California.

More than a third of the community's 213 mobile homes burned as fire zigzagged along a hillside, skipping some streets and razing others.

The fire, in addition to destroying buildings, has damaged about 180 structures and ranks as the fifth-largest wildfire on record in California, according to Cal Fire.

Fire crews made enough progress against other large fires around LA to lift most evacuation orders.

One death has been confirmed. The governor, who strongly criticised Donald Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris climate deal in an interview with CBS due to be broadcast on Sunday evening, urged USA lawmakers to pay more attention to dealing with natural disasters such as fires, floods and earthquakes. North of San Diego, the 4,100-acre (1,660 hectare) Lilac Fire was also 90 percent contained on Monday, after destroying 151 structures.

Among the 6,397 fire personnel on the front lines, fire engines from Victorville, Murrieta, Los Angeles and beyond could be seen parked along winding roads, sitting in the command post set up at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

Top wind speeds were forecast to increase to 55mph on Sunday from 40mph on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Thomas Fire: It had scorched 173,000 acres by early Sunday, with about 15% of it contained.

At least 25,000 homes are threatened by five wildfires, according to the fire protection agency CAL FIRE.

Residents in coastal beach communities have been ordered to leave.

The crews of minimum security inmates will be fighting the Thomas Fire, the department said in a release.

He added that gusty winds and low humidity are continuing to create conditions for the fires to continue to burn.

AlertSanDiego, the region's cellphone emergency alert system, had sent out 23,000 evacuation messages as of Friday morning, including for new evacuations in Oceanside. It was partially contained after burning 362 square miles (937 square kilometers) of dry brush and timber.

Four civilians had suffered injuries and were taken to local hospitals, though authorities could not confirm the severity of the injuries. "It's so disgusting. You never think that it's going to happen to you, and it can".

The winds near the Thomas fire might be a little bit stronger later on Monday night into early Tuesday morning from the north, Munroe said, possibly 5 miles per hour stronger.

One woman, Lauren Fuga, said she watched in shock as the Liberty fire burned down part of her home in Murrieta.
